Event Details
On August 3 from 9:00 to 11:00 am (PHT), AmCham will host the inaugural meeting of its new Creative Industries Committee, coinciding with UNCTAD's International Year of Creative Economy. The Philippines is making great strides to further develop the high potential of its many creative industries, which already contribute 7% of GDP and employ an estimate of 5 million Filipinos under formal and informal employment.
Comprising multiple varied products, services, and skills, Creative Industries is already a key growth sector of the Philippine economy. AmCham has advocated development of Creative Industries together with our partners in the Joint Foreign Chambers since 2010, when the sector was included among the Seven Big Winners of the Arangkada Philippines Project.
In November 2018, AmCham with the Joint Foreign Chambers organized "Creative Industries: The Next Sunrise Industry", a special event as part of the Arangkada Philippines Anniversary Forum and released a policy brief Creative Industries.
Creative Industries are increasingly recognized by government, led by the Department of Trade and Industry and Congress, for the growth that the sector is achieving and the need for better planning, data, promotion, and support to advance to higher levels. Korea is often cited as a model. The Philippine Creative Industries Act has gained traction in Congress, where the House of Representatives created a Special Committee on Creative Industries and Performing Arts. The committee has held extensive hearings and is moving the seminal Philippine Creative Industries Act to enactment by early 2022.
AmCham is proud to launch its Creative Industries Committee on August 3 via Zoom. Mr. Paolo Mercado, founding president of the Creative Economy Council of the Philippines โ the leading industry association in the Philippines - will honor our event with an important not-to-be-missed talk.
The Creative Industries Committee plans to meet every two months. Future sessions will focus on the Philippine Creative Industries Act, followed by meetings to discuss the largest creative industry sectors, including advertising, animation, design, film, and software.
Be more aware of the creative industry potential of the Philippines! You do not have to be a member of AmCham to attend, but you are welcome to become a member. Government and media guests are likewise most welcome, as are friends from abroad, especially the United States, who may wish to trade and invest in this rising sector.
