The Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) committee is conducting a session entitled: "The Future of Data Privacy in the Philippines" on February 9 from 10:00 - 11:30 AM with notable speakers from the National Privacy Commission namely Atty. Leandro Aguirre, Deputy Privacy Commissioner, and Atty. Ivy Villasoto, OIC Director & Division Chief.


The webinar aims to achieve the following objectives:


  1. To explore the Commission's upcoming plans, initiatives, programs, and other updates under the new leadership;
  2. To discuss the recent Court of Appeals decision on the NPC Case No. 19-528 (Pieceland Corp. vs Manila New Life Church Inc.) and its impact on personal information controllers;
  3. To raise awareness on the importance of the Data Privacy Act and compliance by companies with existing requirements;
  4. To discuss the significance of data protection and privacy; and
  5. To explore other matters that may relate to the above.

    Leandro Angelo Aguirre

    Deputy Privacy Commissioner at National Privacy Commission

    Leandro Angelo Y. Aguirre, Deputy Commissioner of the National Privacy Commission, is a lawyer, law professor, and privacy advocate.

    He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of the Philippines College of Law in 2009 and was admitted to the Philippine Bar in 2010. In 2013, he obtained his Master of Laws from Harvard Law School where he took subjects on, among others, mergers and acquisition, information privacy, and corporate and capital markets law and policy. In 2014, he was admitted to the New York State Bar.



    He has wide experience and expertise in legislation serving as an advisor for both Senator Edgardo J. Angara and Senator Juan Edgardo Angara in the formulation and implementation of their respective legislative agenda, including the bill that eventually became the Data Privacy Act of 2012.

    OIC-Director IV, Privacy Policy Office of National Privacy Commission

    Ivy Grace is the OIC-Director of the Privacy Policy Office of the National Privacy Commission, an independent body mandated to administer and implement the Data Privacy Act of 2012.

    She joined the Commission in October 2016.

    She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree major in Public Administration from the University of the Philippines in 2004 and her Bachelor of Laws degree from the Far Eastern University in 2009. She has been in the practice of law since 2010.

    Prior to joining the Commission, she was a Director for Tax Services at SGV & Co, a member practice of Ernst & Young Global Limited.
