###
Event Summary:
Last April 14, the national government rolled out its "progressive" mass testing to better detect COVID-19 cases in the Philippines. The first batch of tests will prioritize high-risk patients such as people showing flu-like symptoms; pregnant women with mild symptoms; elderly with pre-existing health conditions; and the frontlinersโhealthcare workers experiencing respiratory symptoms. As of April 15, the Philippines has only tested more than 35,000 individuals since the approval of testing kits production in early March, a little behind compared to its neighbors in the ASEAN.
This week the national government's initial target is to increase testing capacity to 2,600 to 7,000 per day however and by April 27, 3 days before the lifting of the Luzon-wide ECQ, they aim to conduct 13,000 to 20,000 tests per day. Furthermore, local government units and members of the private sector have stepped in and initiated to do testing in their respective areas and communities.
With more than 100 million in population and the rapid growth of COVID-19 cases across the country, it is crucial to supply more testing kits and broaden the scope of mass testing before we prepare to open up our economy once again. Through sharing of ideas among members of the private sector, it is possible to produce proposals and strategies to better manage the virus and even produce the equipment needed to aid the national government, to speed up mass testing and accommodate more individuals, especially at a local level.
In this regard, AmCham invites you to a Zoom webinar entitled Fighting COVID through a boost in COVID-19 testing on Thursday, April 30, 2020 from 2:30 to 3:30 PM. The discussion will be a brief discussion on the current status of testing in the Philippines and the challenges we are experiencing regarding testing and share insights on what the private sector can do to help speed the testing kit production and access.
