AmCham Philippines

AmCham came to life in 1902 as the Manila Coffee Round Table and later as Manila Merchants Association. Incorporated in 1920, it has since then recognized and reconfirmed the commitment of American business to the development and welfare of the Philippines and the Filipino people.

This is a commitment of long-standing, as its mission statement declares:

The Chamber exists to serve the interests of U.S. businesses through the participation of members in promoting their long-term objectives while contributing to the civic and economic development of the Philippines.”

Regional political-security developments have had a parallel effect on Philippine strategic interests โ€“ from its foreign policy agenda to its national policy direction. The complexities posed by these developments are also greatly influenced by the inherent, internal security challenges and the very distinct political culture of the Philippines. Additionally, the evolving nature of threats has blurred the line between traditional and non-traditional security resulting in the overlapping interests and priorities of the state with the private sector and civil society.

Currently, the Indo-Pacific region is faced with a shifting political-security architecture that is heavily influenced by the emergence of China. Its attempt to strengthen domestic interests, especially on the One China policy, has resulted to clashing views and increasing tensions with other states in the region. From the lens of the Philippines, interests over the West Philippine Sea have been compromised with the Duterte administration's appeasement policy. The China pivot also put other national interests in a vulnerable position. Beyond these external threats, internally, the Philippines continues its war on terror and transnational organized crimes. Frequency of incidents, including the recent Jolo bombing, has raised another alarm on possible triggers that may have caused for such acts to happen. The global trend in terrorism and organized crime have also influenced the evolved local operations, reinforced by issues on the existing shadow economy and the lack of established government institutions/presence.

This webinar aims to map out and explain the effects of these realities to the Philippines and its development, and how it could unfold further in the short- to medium-term view. Moreover, for the long-term view, it will also analyze a possible outlook with a national election on the horizon.
