AmCham Philippines

AmCham came to life in 1902 as the Manila Coffee Round Table and later as Manila Merchants Association. Incorporated in 1920, it has since then recognized and reconfirmed the commitment of American business to the development and welfare of the Philippines and the Filipino people.

This is a commitment of long-standing, as its mission statement declares:

The Chamber exists to serve the interests of U.S. businesses through the participation of members in promoting their long-term objectives while contributing to the civic and economic development of the Philippines.”

As it navigates uncertain times, the Philippines began expanding the bounds of its diplomacy to reach out to non-traditional partners, while keeping robust ties with longstanding allies and friends. Although relations with China, its biggest trade partner but also a major security challenge, has been getting much attention, the country has also been making overtures with Russia and India. Do these actions give shape to an enduring desire to pursue a more "independent" foreign policy or are these simply tactical steps to hedge against a turbulent and unpredictable age. Is it the beginning of a nascent drive to be a middle power in a vibrant but tough neighborhood caught in a spiraling great power rivalry?

As a major economic and security partner, the United States' strategy towards the region will help inform how regional countries will respond and calibrate. With the dust from the recent elections settling down in Washington, what will be the face of America's Asia policy? Will we see continuity, reversal or a muddled middle ground? How will ASEAN and U.S. alliances in the Indo-Pacific figure in that?
