Water is life โ without it, we are nothing. The management of this scarce and limited resource is key to ensuring sustainability for the country and water security for generations. Though blessed with the resource, its poor management has often been cited as a key reason for the water insecurity we experience. Public clamor has grown to find a fix to this annual water problem. However, hope arises with the recent movement of proposed legislation that aims to organize governance and management over our water resources through the establishment of a Department of Water Resources. With only a little over a year left in this 18th Congress, there is not much time to get this bill passed into law. As this sets us on the path towards water security and sustainable development, it is important to raise support and awareness of this legislation to finally lay a working framework and roadmap for the water sector before this Congress ends.
In this context, and in celebration of 2021 World Water Day, the Philippine Water Partnership, the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, and the National Water Resources Board will be hosting a Virtual Forum on the Updates of the proposed bills creating the Department of Water Resources and the Water Regulatory Commission from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on March 16, 2021. We have invited Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles,Senator Grace Poe, Senator Cynthia Villar, and Congressman Joey Salceda, whose legislative committees took the lead on the said bills, to join a panel discussion with the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and the National Water Resources Board (NWRB).
