AmCham North Luzon Chapter

AmCham came to life in 1902 as the Manila Coffee Round Table and later as Manila Merchants Association. Incorporated in 1920, it has since then recognized and reconfirmed the commitment of American business to the development and welfare of the Philippines and the Filipino people.

This is a commitment of long-standing, as its mission statement declares:

The Chamber exists to serve the interests of U.S. businesses through the participation of members in promoting their long-term objectives while contributing to the civic and economic development of the Philippines.”

Travel restrictions leading to a nosedive in demand has gravely affected the tourism industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, the light at the end of the tunnel is still a distant reality give the travel limitations still imposed.

The government is implementing a travel bubble to help trigger the industry's recovery during these trying times. This initiative will allow residents from areas with a low number of COVID-19 cases and foreign tourists from COVID-free nations. The opening of Baguio City to locals from Region 1 is patterned after the execution of other countries, be it for business or pleasure.

In this light, the American Chamber of Commerce Philippines - North Luzon Chapter will be holding its first virtual General Membership Meeting with the topic "Future of Travel Bubble in the Local Setting".

Bernadette Fatima T. Romulo-Puyat is the current Secretary of the Department of Tourism after being appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte in 2018. She attended the University of the Philippines and pursued an undergraduate and a Masters degree in Economics.

Secretary Romulo-Puyat was a former lecturer at the UP School of Economics (1994- 2006). She also served as an Economic Consultant at the Housing and Urban Development Coordination Council (HUDCC) (2001-2002) and the Presidential Management Staff (2005-2006), and was Deputy Cabinet Secretary at the Office of the President in 2006.

She was appointed as Undersecretary at the Department of Agriculture from 2007 to 2018 where she was designated to handle Special Concerns, Administration and Finance, and Agribusiness and Marketing. Secretary Romulo-Puyat assumed office as the Secretary of the Department of Tourism on May 14, 2018.

Undersecretary Benito C. Bengzon, Jr. champions tourism as an avenue that empowers locals to create and improve the services that will beautify and preserve their communities. Within the Department of Tourism, he has completed a posting in Tokyo, worked with planning, product research and development, and investment promotions, led a regional marketing team, and served as Assistant Secretary for International Tourism Promotion.

These experiences have built an ardent dedication to inclusive and sustainable tourism development, which are also integral parts of the Department’s campaign to promote the Philippines around the globe.

In addition to serving as the Tourism Secretary’s alternate in the Board of the Philippine Tourism Promotions Board and the Philippine Commission on Sports and Scuba Diving, Benito is also a member of multiple travel organisations and committees to promote ecotourism.
