Contact tracing has been a buzzword in various parts of the world as a response to the growing number of COVID-19 cases. It has become part and parcel of the efforts to contain the spread of the virus, along with testing and isolation while awaiting a vaccine. According to the World Health Organization, when systematically applied, the chains of transmission of an infectious disease may be broken through contact tracing. However, six month into our battle against COVID-19, the Philippines remains to be at a 1:5 contact tracing ratio, far behind the ideal contact tracing ratio of 1:30-1:37.
Fortunately, initiatives and developments from the private sector are arising, providing possible tools to help the country improve its contact tracing capacity and aid in the safe reopening of business establishments, especially SMEs. The likes of Safe Pass, a mobile contact tracing application, allow establishments to have an inclusive, accessible, and contactless tracing and monitoring tool.
Such applications do not only lessen possibilities of cross contamination from the use of pen and paper in filling out contract tracing sheets done by many establishments but also allow a more centralized, secure, and convenient data collection for businesses.
