The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely impacted almost every aspect of our society and none more so than the most vulnerable among us—individuals with chronic and autoimmune diseases. Chronic and autoimmune diseases include Psoriasis, Multiple Sclerosis, Type 1 Diabetes, Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), and many others. Most individuals with autoimmune diseases are already medically fragile and suffer from complex medical challenges. Furthermore, this population has not yet received the attention from society or the health sector that it requires, or deserves. Unfortunately, this has been exacerbated by the urgency and exponential increase of COVID-19 cases around the globe which has taken over the priorities of health care providers.

Even in the best of times, individuals with chronic and autoimmune diseases and their health workers report facing significant care inadequacies and unmet medical needs as a result of their illness. In a time where the country is facing a virulent pandemic, how can the private sector take part in ensuring that no one is left behind?

Dr. Janette Loreto-Garin or Doc Nanay as her constituents from the First District of Iloilo call her -is a physician and a legislator.

As a former Secretary of Health, Dr. Janette Garin introduced systems and innovative programs that were seen to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and curb fraud in the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth). She continues to advocate for quality health care which includes access to immunization – moving towards a country where everyone is protected against disease through the provision of health care services and life-saving vaccines.

In 2020, at the height of the Covid pandemic in our country, she filed HB 6707 – the Crushing Covid Act which urged the Government to make RT PCR testing accessible, affordable and available to all and to adopt a whole-of- government approach to control the pandemic.

To assist hospitals increase their Covid 19 testing capacity, she helped forge partnerships with the private sector. As Chief Implementer of the Project Ark-RT PCR Initiative, she was able to facilitate the procurement of more than 30 RT-PCR machines for 18 public hospitals nationwide through the donation of various private companies.

Trained in Advance Vaccinology, She continues to help various sectors and communities by providing Vaccine Literacy activities to counter infodemic and educate them on the safety and benefits of COvid19 vaccination.

She continues to support and assist vaccination efforts in both public and private settings. She has recently launched drive-thru vaccination in her district in Iloilo to ensure a safer and more convenient way to access Covid19 vaccines.

With more than 20 years of public service - she continues to believe that the way forward in achieving quality health care lies in prudent government spending, accountability and partnerships.
