Combating COVID-19: LGU Vaccination Strategies and Initiatives

The Professional Women of AmCham (PWOA) committee of the Chamber is holding a meeting entitled: Combating COVID-19: LGU Vaccination Strategies and Initiatives on 4 May 2021 from 10:00 - 11:30 AM with Makati City Mayor Abby Binay and Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte.

Focusing on a smaller scope, the Philippines is reported to have 91,754 active cases as of 25 March 2021 and 684,311 cases in totality. Despite immense efforts, the country continues to struggle in battling the pandemic due to vast circumstances such as full capacity hospitals, insufficient supply of vaccines resulting in low percentage of vaccination schemes, extensive community quarantines that incapacitate the economy among others. Nevertheless, progress is evident as we proceed. The government persists to seek beneficial and effective solutions to counter the virus alongside the disruptions it continuously precipitates.

Ma. Josefina “Joy” Belmonte

Mayor at Quezon City

Makati Mayor Mar-len Abigail S. Binay is a lawyer who has served in both the legislative and executive branches of government. She first represented Makati in Congress in 2007 when she was 31 years old, making her one of the youngest solons in the country, and served for two more terms after winning the 2010 and 2013 elections. In 2016, she won the mayoral race in Makati and immediately instituted reforms and innovations in the programs and operations of the city government to make services more efficient, accessible and convenient for Makatizens. Now on her second term, Mayor Abby continues to lead Makati’s transformation into a technology-embracing “smart city” that is sustainable and resilient, as well as a model of inclusive progress and development.

Ma. Josefina Belmonte is the first elected woman Mayor of Quezon City. She is also the Executive Vice President of the League of Cities of the Philippines.

Recently, she was awarded as one of the Top Ten Outstanding Mayors of the Philippines by the Gawad Filipino Awards. Prior to this, she served as the Vice Mayor and Presiding Officer of the Quezon City Council from 2010 to 2019 where she was also awarded as Most Outstanding Vice Mayor by the Gawad Sulo ng Bayan, and two-time Most Outstanding City Council in the Philippines under her leadership.

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed a tremendous challenge given that Quezon City is the biggest City in Metro Manila in terms of land area and population. Despite these challenges, the City is able to consistently improve its situation by working with other stakeholders, both from the public and the private sector, while also implementing strict regulations and encouraging community compliance and pursuing sustainable programs.
