Communist Insurgency in India: Exploring the Intersections with Philippines

Event Details

The joint AmCham Security and Disaster Resource Group (SDRG) and Overseas Security Advisory Council - Manila Country Council (OSAC) will have its monthly webinar entitled "Communist Insurgency in India: Exploring the Intersections with Philippines" on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at 3:00 to 4:00 PM.

At the outset, the major communist insurgent group in India will be introduced by briefly outlining its history. Thereafter, the speaker will focus on a relative comparison of the Indian and Filipino Maoist movements. Next in course would be the highlights of the principles of counterinsurgency applied by the Indian security forces against the Maoists. The talk will gravitate towards exploring the areas of possible co-operation between the security forces of India and Philippines with regard to taming the ongoing five-decades old insurgencies in their countries

Dr. Uddipan Mukherjee, PhD

Dr. Uddipan Mukherjee, PhD specializes in the Maoist insurgency / Left-Wing Extremism [LWE] in India. In that capacity he has contributed chapters in edited volumes, peer-reviewed papers and articles in journals, think-tanks and also been a television commentator. In 2020, the New Delhi based think-tank Vivekananda International Foundation inducted him in the 9-member national Task Force on LWE He has been published by the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses [now MPIDSA], Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies, Centre for Land Warfare Studies, ETH Zurich, Eurasia Review, The Diplomat, Diplomatic Courier, Institute for Transnational Studies, UPI Asia, Faultlines, among other outlets. His forthcoming publications include contributed chapters on the communist insurgency in India and Nepal, along with that on Counterinsurgency, in the Routledge Handbook on Terrorist and Insurgent groups (Taylor and Francis). He has a PhD from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India and is presently a Central Civil Service officer under the Ministry of Defence of the Government of India.
