AmCham Philippines

AmCham came to life in 1902 as the Manila Coffee Round Table and later as Manila Merchants Association. Incorporated in 1920, it has since then recognized and reconfirmed the commitment of American business to the development and welfare of the Philippines and the Filipino people.

This is a commitment of long-standing, as its mission statement declares:

The Chamber exists to serve the interests of U.S. businesses through the participation of members in promoting their long-term objectives while contributing to the civic and economic development of the Philippines.”

Summary:

Aside from the concerns over health and safety and the slowing down of the economy bought by COVID-19 perhaps education is also one of the major sectors affected by the pandemic. Greatly reliant on face to face interaction, schools and other academic institutions continue to experience the negative consequences of community quarantines and social distancing. Until there is a cure or vaccine for COVID in the Philippines, the education sector is compelled to shift to other modes of delivery.

Certainly, education need not to stop but rather transform in order to adapt to today's issues. With the absence of physical interaction, we turn to technology and digital solutions to pursue learning continuity however, it is not without its challenges and perils. As members of the private sector, we know that an effective learning continuity strategy will affect not only the future of students but also the future of human capital.

For the month of June, the Education Committee (EdCom) of AmCham will be having a webinar on June 9 (Tuesday), 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. via Zoom to briefly discuss the "new normal" for education, the digital solutions and alternatives to traditional learning, and its implications to Philippine education.

The webinar will also touch upon the following points:

  • Shift in teaching methods and strategies
  • Multi-modal delivery of education and its implication to Philippine education system
  • Potential of online learning/distance learning and inclusivity issues
  • Opportunities for private sector to support public sector in the delivery of quality education
  • Effects of shift in education to the future of human capital and overall, the economy
