Flight to Recovery: Sustainable Ecotourism

AmCham came to life in 1902 as the Manila Coffee Round Table and later as Manila Merchants Association. Incorporated in 1920, it has since then recognized and reconfirmed the commitment of American business to the development and welfare of the Philippines and the Filipino people.

This is a commitment of long-standing, as its mission statement declares:

Event Details

The Tourism and Hospitality (TH), Environment and Urban Development (EUD), and Sustainability committees of the Chamber is holding a joint session entitled: "Flight to Recovery: Sustainable Ecotourism" on 28 July from 10:00 - 11:30 AM with WWF Executive Director Katherine Custodio.

In the previous year, leisure travel seemed impossible on account of the health crisis. Massive decline in the industry is immensely discerned as it proves to be the most devastated sector. However, an opposite effect is perceived in the environment. Movement restriction and a significant slowdown of social and economic activities have improved air quality in many cities and reduced water pollution in different parts of the world.

Now that we are slowly recovering and getting back on our feet with vaccination and loosen restrictions-- leisure travel is within our reach, once again. It is then our duty to promote sustainable ecotourism where we ensure that traveling should not harm the environment but rather protect it for the next generations to come. It is pivotal knowing how to maintain and conserve our resources and recognizing that we should not take more than what we can give to our mother earth.

Katherine 'Trin' Custodio

Executive Director of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines

Katherine Custodio took the position of Executive Director of WWF-Philippines in late 2020 after having spent a decade with the WWF Network. Prior to taking on her new role with WWF-Philippines, she was the director of the WWF Asia Pacific Growth Strategy (APGS), a growth and investments program that seeks to expand the reach of the WWF Network within the region.

As director of the WWF-APGS, Custodio was able to secure new partnerships for the network while steadily growing the supporter base for the conservation organization. In her time as director, she was able to more than double the amount of funds being channelled into the various conservation programs being rolled out by WWF offices across the Asia Pacific region.

Custodio’s time with WWF began in 2008, with WWF-Philippines. Her new role as Executive Director for the countries’ national office is, for her, a return to her roots.

As Executive Director of WWF-Philippines, Custodio commits to scaling up the organization’s impact within the country. Through WWF-Philippines she looks to engage millions of Filipinos and to help set the natural environment of the Philippines on track toward recovery. Deeply inspired by the ocean, she is committed to finding solutions for people to work with nature and not against it, for the sake of the shared future of all who call the islands home.
