AmCham Philippines

AmCham came to life in 1902 as the Manila Coffee Round Table and later as Manila Merchants Association. Incorporated in 1920, it has since then recognized and reconfirmed the commitment of American business to the development and welfare of the Philippines and the Filipino people.

This is a commitment of long-standing, as its mission statement declares:

The Chamber exists to serve the interests of U.S. businesses through the participation of members in promoting their long-term objectives while contributing to the civic and economic development of the Philippines.”

President Rodrigo Duterte delivered his 5th SONA on 27 July 2020 which is deemed to be the simplest yet least attended SONA ever in recent Philippine history. If not all, most eyes were on him as he tackled the concerns and issues of the country, and what actions the government plans to undertake in order to address the complications existent in the state.

Veering toward the economic realm, it is reported that the Philippine economy has declined in 22 years during the 1st quarter of the year. Unemployment rate also mounted to 17.7% in April 2020. It was also predicted that 10 million Filipinos can lose their jobs due to the health crisis. In the hopes of addressing the economic challenges of the country, the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act, Bayanihan to Recover as One Act, Accelerated Recovery and Investments Stimulus for the Economy of the Philippines (ARISE), Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises (CREATE formerly known as CITIRA), Financial Institutions Strategic Transfer Act (FIST), COVID-19 Unemployment Reduction Economic Stimulus (CURES), Increasing and Restructuring the Excise Tax Rates on Alcohol, Heated Tobacco, and Vapor Products, and Social Amelioration Program are few of the many resolutions that the government considers to be effective in pumping back the economy.

The webinar aims to achieve the following:

  1. To discuss some of the financial and economic highlights of the SONA 2020
  2. To tackle bills and acts that could potentially lead towards Philippine recovery
  3. To be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of each stimulus or system proposed to address the pandemic
  4. To know what steps to undertake on how can the Philippines be attractive to foreign investors
  5. To be informed of the status and condition of the Philippine economy and where is it heading towards to; and
  6. To serve as an avenue to exchange dialogues and insights among individuals.
