Summary:
Education is one of the most affected sectors by the COVID-19 pandemic. Both educators and learners are currently experiencing the adverse consequences of the temporary closure of schools for health and safety reasons.
The Department of Education (DepEd) recently announced that schools will reopen on August 24, 2020, using a learning delivery mode called Blended Learning Program (BLP).
The BLP is a combination of "online distant learning" and personal delivery of printed learning modules to the homes of the students, especially for learners who do not have Internet access and interactive facilities at home. Also, the BLP plans to use radio and television to reach less accessible areas in the country. On the other hand, the Commission on Higher Education has also issued guidelines for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the use of a combination of online education, flexible learning, and face-to-face mode. Both agencies are optimistic that they will be able to roll out said plans. Despite this, many parents and students continue to entertain doubts on the preparedness of the educational system, the teachers, parents, and students to transition to the new learning modality called the BLP.
The Education Committee and the Human Capital & Resources Committee of AmCham will hold a webinar entitled "School's Out!: Learning Continuity in the Age of COVID-19" on June 23, 2020 (Tuesday), 2-3 PM via Zoom, to provide updates on the plans of the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education to ensure learning continuity for Filipinos during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The webinar will discuss the following:
- The shift to blended learning and other modes of delivery
- Implication of multi-modal delivery to Philippine education system
- Potential of online learning/distance learning
- Challenges of "new normal" in education (infrastructure, access and distribution of materials, inclusivity and equitability issues, etc.)
- Opportunities for private sector to support public sector in the delivery of quality education
- Effects of shift in education to the future of human capital development and the economy.
