AmCham Philippines

AmCham came to life in 1902 as the Manila Coffee Round Table and later as Manila Merchants Association. Incorporated in 1920, it has since then recognized and reconfirmed the commitment of American business to the development and welfare of the Philippines and the Filipino people.

This is a commitment of long-standing, as its mission statement declares:

The Chamber exists to serve the interests of U.S. businesses through the participation of members in promoting their long-term objectives while contributing to the civic and economic development of the Philippines.”

Has Beijing won in the South China Sea? Have Southeast Asian countries basically thrown in the towel after what appeared to have been Beijing's act of changing facts on the ground in the disputed waters? The dynamics between China and Southeast Asia over the South China Sea disputes, long an intractable geopolitical flashpoint that has seen rising temperature thanks also in no small part to the complication of the tussle between China and the United States, remain key areas of interest.

For this joint Trade & Investment, OSAC, and SDRG committees webinar, Dr. Collin Koh's presentation seeks to offer an update of the latest South China Sea developments, and examine the varying interests of the key actors – China, Southeast Asian parties, and external powers such as, chiefly, the U.S. – as well as the dynamics between them, not least with the Philippines as a key focus in view of what appear to be noticeable "shifts", if it can be described this way, in the Duterte Administration's stance towards the disputes.

Speaker

Dr. Collin Koh (Research Fellow at S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University)
