The Professional Women of AmCham (PWOA) committee of the Chamber is holding a session entitled: "Striking Stereotypes: The Rise of Women Leadership" on the 27th of October from 10:00 - 11:30 AM with female leaders Mariels Winhoffer of IBM, Maan Mariano of BDO, Anna Vergara of Sheraton, and Maoi Arroyo.

In the continuous fight against gender inequality, not only must we recognize the significance of paving the way for women in the general working field but to fully embody this in our day-to-day living to create an impact and eventually contribute to true gender equality. Despite this obstacle, we must remember to acknowledge the efforts that have been carried out that without such, we would not be able to reach the point of where we are-- of finally seeing women taking leadership roles that only men once are privileged of. Its full potential may still be far-fetched but at least we are on the right track towards it and making progress.

As the Vice President and Global Managing Director, Mariels A Winhoffer is responsible for the full operations of IBM between Cisco and IBM and across all geographies. Mariels’ focus is on Cisco’s overall success and satisfaction by bringing the best of IBM to deliver on the promise and commitment as Cisco’s trusted partner.

Mariels joined IBM in 1985 and held various technical, services, and sales management posts within IBM. Key roles include Vice President for the Industrial Sector, Business Development Leader for Global Technology Services (GTS) Strategic Outsourcing, Sales and Services Executive Leader for Electronics, Aerospace & Defense, and Automotive accounts, President of IBM Philippines, and General Manager of Global Business Partners for the Asia Pacific.

In 2009, Mariels was recognized as one of the 50 Outstanding Asian Americans in Business. In 2012, she became the first woman to hold the highest post in the Philippine office for IBM. She has been recognized for her industry leadership, deep client insights, business development, strategic partnership and vision, global experience, and outstanding leadership.

Mariels holds a bachelor’s degree in Finance and Computer Science from Fordham University. She is married to Ernest Winhoffer and have 4 children, Nicole, Ernest Jr, Michael, and Mark.

Maoi Arroyo is a multi-awarded entrepreneur and investor. What she does best is show people how to profit with a purpose and how to think differently so that they can solve seemingly intractable problems. At 35 she had created 3,500 jobs in the poorest parts of the Philippines by commercializing innovations in an emerging market. She’s the founder and principal of the Ignite Impact Fund and advises the World Economic Forum on sustainable investing. She’s also co-founded a social enterprise that supplies pasteurized eggs to 5 major hotels, a fashion brand that upcycles leather jackets into bags, a media company that promotes independent Filipino films, and a property development firm. Anna Liza Vergara joined Marriott International more than 27 years ago, working her way up the ranks to become Manila Marriott Hotel's Resident Manager in 2009. Powered by sheer hard work and determination, Anna currently holds the position of General Manager and oversees the operations of Sheraton Manila Hotel since its opening in 2018.

Despite being appointed in a key position in the hospitality industry, she’s happily married and is a mother of two—balancing a career while raising her family and making sure to accompany them on sporting events just like a classic “soccer mom.”

As one of the few Filipino women leaders in a Western- and male-dominated industry, Vergara continues to advocate for diversity and women empowerment as she takes the helm of a well-renowned international brand by the biggest travel company in the world—Marriott International.

Despite being at the top, Anna believes that her work as a general manager does not end within the property she is managing. Rather, she’s planting a seed as a woman breaking the glass ceiling in the hospitality industry—making way for greater opportunities not only for women but for all of those who are also building their own careers.

Marie Antoniette Mariano, is the Vice President and Desk Head for Europe and North America in BDO Unibank Inc. She is responsible for expanding the reach of BDO in the foreign community she serves. With a strong background in corporate marketing and leadership, she was able to bridge the difference in culture between the nationalities she works with. Maan worked her way up with passion and determination from an entry-level position to her seat today. She has always embraced her womanhood in creating a difference in everything she does which made her land several board seats in the European Chambers where she is the only Filipina serving director. A single mother to three daughters who she considers her rock.
