In this day and age, more women are taking on important roles and making their mark across the world. It is both inspiring and empowering to see women be in leadership roles and in fields that were once purely for men.

This month, the Professional Women of AmCham (PWOA) - Women in Leadership series will focus on women in the field of aviation, who elevated themselves to greater heights. Our guest speaker is Ms. Joyce Hufton, a retired Airline Transport Pilot with over 25 years of experience in Aviation.

This discussion will focus on the challenges of women who are in male-dominated fields, the inspiring ways on how to rise above the challenges, and how fellow women can empower others to take on important roles despite society's stereotypes.

Ms. Joyce Hufton graduated from the University of the Philippines Diliman with a double degree in AB Political Science minor in Psychology. She also furthered her studies and took Business Economics in Universidad de Economiques et Studiantes Stuttgart, Germany, and certified with honors in International Business Relations and Diplomacy from The Center for Diplomatic and Strategic Studies in Paris.

She has always been attracted to the skies but she put her dream on hold until she was college. While taking up her studies in UP, she simultaneously went to a commercial flying school. She went to Singapore to receive more training and worked as an instructress and the United Air Flying School where she mostly taught theoretical courses such as Aerodynamics, Navigation, and Weight and Balance, the latter two being her areas of expertise. Over 25 years in the industry, she has garnered numerous pilot licenses such as pilot’s instructor’s license and as Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), the license needed to become Pilot in Command, among many others.

Her passion in aviation did not stop in taking command over all sorts of aircrafts. She shared her decades of experience by teaching the Air Rescue Squadron of the Armed Forces of the Philippines on Air and Rescue, Pararescue Operations, Disaster/Relief Operations, and Maritime Patrol among the many other institutions she has helped and taught in. Currently, she is training on Air Evac, a type of helicopter mostly used for Aeromedical evacuation.

When she is not flying for work, you would catch her doing her hobbies like doing Aerobatics and diving in different spots in the Philippines and around the world. As a professional diver, she was able to spearhead Scubasurero in 2013, an ongoing initiative to protect the ocean from single-use plastic and, and “Adopt a Coral” project. She is also an instructor in the Naval Special Operations Group (NAVSOG) of the Philippine Navy.
