Digital technologies can deliver immense developmental rewards through the promotion of inclusion, efficiency, and innovation. To reap these rewards, a strong foundation of digital infrastructure and policy framework, supported by digital enablers including payment platforms and logistics, has to be put in place. The Philippines is already benefitting from digital technologies, and both public and private sectors have taken initiatives to support its development. Nonetheless, the Philippines is far from reaching its full potential with the country consistently ranking below regional peers in digital indicators. Despite below-global average digital adoption, there is a digitalization momentum the Philippines can leverage on.

Economist at World Bank

Kevin C. Chua is an economist at the Macroeconomics, Trade and Investment Global Practice in the World Bank Philippines office.
He joined the Bank in July 2016, and has since then engaged with the preparation and publication of the bi-annual Philippines Economic Update. He also prepares a monthly brief on developments in the Philippine economy, and contributes to the regional report on the East Asia Economic Update. He previously managed a trust fund on behalf of a bank’s client, supporting capacity building and delivering technical advisory. Kevin currently leads an analytical work on digital economy in the Philippines.
Prior to joining the Bank, Kevin was an assistant professor of economics at the Shandong University Center for Economic Research in China. He worked as a consultant for the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs in New York, and as a credit officer in a local commercial bank in the Philippines. He holds a doctorate degree in economics from Fordham University, and a master of international affairs with focus on international economic policy from Columbia University. Kevin currently sits in the board of the Philippine Economic Society.
