The Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Creative Industries (CI) committees of the Chamber are holding a session on "Understanding Indigenous Intellectual Property Rights" on 7 September from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM with Atty. Robert Samson of IPOPHL, Mr. Allan Capuyan of NCIP (Invited), and Dr. Analyn Salvador-Amores of the University of the Philippines Baguio via Zoom.
Focusing on the Indigenous Peoples' intellectual property rights, their cultures, traditions, practices, systems, and knowledge provide the country indispensable art to promote its beauty and diversity. Despite their contributions and significance to society, indigenous peoples remain in a constant struggle to fight for their basic rights to land ownership or respect for their cultural beliefs and practices.
Considering the recent controversy of the alleged cultural exploitation of the Butbut Tribe, we can dwell on IPOPHL's statement: "...the intellectual property system, which may be able to give them a certain degree of control over the exploitation and use of genetic resources (GR) under their custody, their traditional knowledge (TK) and traditional cultural expressions (TCE), can bring in positive change to their current circumstances."
