AmCham came to life in 1902 as the Manila Coffee Round Table and later as Manila Merchants Association. Incorporated in 1920, it has since then recognized and reconfirmed the commitment of American business to the development and welfare of the Philippines and the Filipino people.

This is a commitment of long-standing, as its mission statement declares:

The Chamber exists to serve the interests of U.S. businesses through the participation of members in promoting their long-term objectives while contributing to the civic and economic development of the Philippines.”

Founder of VERA Files

Our Speaker is a veteran journalist. She is the founder of VERA Files (https://verafiles.org), a group that undertakes in-depth reporting on current issues and does fact-checking to fight disinformation.

As a reporter, she has covered the education, health and science, PCGG, and the foreign affairs beats, before she was assigned to cover politics. She has also covered Malacañang during the Ramos presidency and continues to watch closely the presidency till this time.

She has won, with Sheila Coronel, the Jaime V. Ongpin award for best investigative reporting in 1999 for their special report on the Public Estates Authority- Amari deal dubbed as “The Grandmother of all scams” she did for the Philippine Center for Investigative Reporting. On the same year, she was also a Marshall McLuhan fellow.

She co-wrote with Australian journalist Greg Hutchinson the book, “Hot Money, Warm Bodies – The Downfall of President Joseph Estrada” in 2001.

She currently writes for the newspaper Malaya Business Insight as well as for ABS-CBN online.
