What You Need to Know: COVID-19, the Delta Variant, and the Next Pandemic

AmCham's Healthcare and Wellness and Security and Disaster Resources committees will have a joint webinar session entitled What You Need to Know: COVID-19, the Delta Variant, and the Next Pandemic on Thursday, July 29, 2021 from 2:00 to 3:30 PM. The meeting will feature National Task Force Against COVID-19 special adviser Dr. Ted Herbosa and OCTA Research Group senior fellows Dr. Guido David and Fr. Nicanor Austriaco.

This month's webinar aims to present credible information to help better understand the health crisis at hand, especially with newer strains of the virus, and be informed of the new precautionary measures to further be protected against the continuously evolving pandemic. Lastly, the meeting aims to share recommendations on how we can surpass present challenges brought by COVID-19 and, looking forward, how we can impede another pandemic such as COVID-19 from recurring.

Dr. Ted Herbosa: Dr. Teodoro “Ted” Herbosa was the Health Undersecretary of Philippines from 2010 to 2015. One of his important accomplishments during his term was helping achieve Universal Health Coverage. He also led the modernization of public hospitals through Health Facilities Enhancement Funds and the Public-Private Partnerships (PPP). Dr. Herbosa has extensive experience in Trauma Surgery and Disaster and Emergency Medicine. In the University of the Philippines, he started the Fellowship Program for Trauma Surgery and the Residency Program in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Herbosa has also distinguished himself as a dedicated community servant. He is currently the Chairman of the Physicians for Peace, Philippines, and formerly the Vice President of the UP Alumni Association. He was the Executive Vice President of the University of the Philippines System from 2017 to 2021. Among his several accomplishments as a Chair, he further expanded knowledge of the university on the Road Safety Emerging Interdisciplinary Research and created the UP COVID-19 Pandemic Response Team which has been overseeing the safety of all the university’s employees across the country. He is currently a special adviser to the Philippines’ National Task Force Against COVID-19. He is also a professor of Emergency Medicine and Trauma Surgery at the UP-PGH, and faculty at the National Telehealth Center at UP Manila.

Fredegusto Guido David is currently a Professor of Mathematics in University of the Philippines. He obtained his MS Mathematics and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M University. He served as Director of Computational Science Research Center of the University of the Philippines from 2009 to 2018. He was also an Adjunct Professor with the Asian Institute of Management MSDS Program. In 2010, he was awarded one of Ten Outstanding Young Scientists of the Philippines. His areas of research include Mathematical Modeling, Artificial Neural Networks, Biomechanics, Numerical Analysis, Stochastic Differential Equations, Mathematical Biology and Game Theory.

In addition to his teaching and research, he also cohosts Pinoy Scientist on Radyo Agila. Since April 2020, he has been involved in Covid-19 modeling and forecasting as Fellow of the OCTA Research Group.

Rev. Nicanor Austriaco, O.P., completed his Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering, summa cum laude, at the University of Pennsylvania, and then earned his Ph.D. in Biology from M.I.T. where he was a fellow of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). He was ordained a priest in the Order of Preachers in May of 2004. He earned his Pontifical License in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) in Moral Theology, summa cum laude, at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC, in 2005, and a Pontifical Doctorate in Sacred Theology (S.T.D.) at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, in 2015. He completed his M.B.A. at Providence College in 2020. Fr. Austriaco currently serves as Professor of Biology and Professor of Theology at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island; Director of ThomisticEvolution.org; and Founder/Chief Operating Officer of Semper Veritas, LLC. Beginning in August 2021, he will also be a Professor of Biological Sciences and a Professor of Sacred Theology at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines. His NIH-funded laboratory at Providence College is investigating the genetics of programmed cell death using the yeasts, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans, as model organisms. During the pandemic, he pivoted his ongoing research efforts to developing a yeast delivery platform for a COVID-19 vaccine for the Philippines. Fr. Austriaco’s first book, Biomedicine and Beatitude: An Introduction to Catholic Bioethics, was published by the Catholic University of America Press in 2011. It was recognized as a 2012 Choice outstanding academic title by the Association of College and Research Libraries. A second edition of the book is in press with an expected publication date in 2021. Fr. Austriaco recently received a 2021 Outstanding Scientific Paper Award from the National Academy of Science and Technology of the Philippines for a research paper describing a mobility-guided model for the COVID-19 pandemic in Metro Manila. The scientific paper was published in the Philippine Journal of Science. During the past year, Fr. Austriaco has been Visiting Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Santo Tomas (UST). He is also a fellow of OCTA Research, an independent team of data analysts that provides providing expert data analysis, forecasts, and recommendations for pandemic management for the national and local government officials in the Philippines. Most recently, Fr. Austriaco is the lead investigator for the UST-CoVAX Vaccine Awareness team at UST that is working to promote the use of the COVID-19 vaccines to end the pandemic in the Philippines.
