Event Details

The Healthcare and Wellness Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines will be conducting an event entitled "Addressing Inflation of Drugs and Medicines in the Philippines", which will be held on June 20, 2 PM - 4 PM, via Zoom.


Drugs and Medicines are basic healthcare needs of the Philippine population. Through this, people's lives can be saved, and the healthcare industry of the country will be improved. In the Philippines, several policies to increase access to quality medicines were made, which is an important step towards a wider healthcare coverage.


AmCham Philippines believes that it is high time to discuss the best possible approach on addressing the high cost of drugs and medicines in the country.

    The speaker is one of the pioneers of Modern Trauma Care in the Philippines with more than 3 decades of work in Trauma, Emergencies and disasters. He was one of the original founders of Asian Collaboration for Trauma in 2012
    He was appointed as the Health Undersecretary or Deputy Minister of Health of the Philippines (2010 - 2015). He was the government focal person and Coordinator of Foreign Medical Teams in Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.
    In the University of the Philippines, he started the Fellowship Training for Trauma Surgery & the Residency in Emergency Medicine. He was a Professor at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (2007-10). He was International Associate for John Hopkins University, for the Hospital Preparedness for Emergencies (HOPE) course.
    He was a Board member of the World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine. He is Professor & Chairman of Emergency Medicine and Trauma Surgery at Philippine General Hospital. His most recent government appointment as the special adviser of the National Task Force against Covid-19.

    Mr. Ochave is President of RiteMed Philippines, Inc. and Pharex Healthcare, Inc. He is Chairman of the Board of Ambica International Trading Corporation and heads other business units under the United Laboratories Health Group. At Unilab, Inc., he is a Senior Vice President, managing several enabler groups, including Business Development, Legal Services Group, External Affairs, and Regulatory Affairs. As the Head of Business Development, he is responsible for establishing partnerships with healthcare companies locally and abroad. He has been traveling to India, Europe, Korea, Japan, among others, for the last 20 years to visit pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and meet their owners and senior executives.

    He obtained his B.S. in Chemical Engineering and Bachelor of Laws degrees from the University of the Philippines –Diliman, both under scholarship grants. He graduated salutatorian at UP Law School. He obtained his Master of Laws degree from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor under a Clyde Dewitt fellowship. He ranked 7th in the 1986 Chemical Engineering Board and 11th in the 1992 Bar Examinations. He was given highest honors in the Management Development Program of the Asian Institute of Management.

    In 2021, he was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award for Corporate Governance in the Pharmaceutical Industry by the U.P. Alumni Association. He was also awarded Most Distinguished Alumnus of the U.P. College of Engineering in 2020, the Aguhon Awards by the Young Global Leaders at the Asian Institute of Management in 2017, and Gawad Lagablab by the Philippine Science High School Alumni Association in 2011.
