The passage of RA 9003 or "The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000" has been a milestone for Philippine legislature. RA 9003 is recognized all over the world as one of the most comprehensive and systematic environmental laws that would combat looming problems on waste management.Despite that, the Philippines is still considered as one of the top contributors of plastic waste in the world. In 2016 alone, the country has produced over 14 million metric tons of waste.

The private sector, through the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (AMCHAM) recognizes the importance of environmental sustainability in achieving inclusive growth. The chamber also sustains its support to effective policies and government initiatives that would induce collaborative efforts and promote sustainable and ecological alternatives to the population.

In line with this, the Environment and Urban Development Committee of AmCham presents its first Sustainability Summit with the theme ""Promoting Circular Economy towards a World without Waste." A forum that provides a platform for both public and private, business groups, civil society groups and the academe to dialogue and discuss the existing challenges, issues and developments in the country's waste management and material recycling efforts. Moreover, it intends to build partnerships among key stakeholders in enhancing existing and future frameworks.
